Subluxation
“A misaligned (out-of-place) bone.”
|
An uncorrected misaligned bone can change the normal action of the nervous system (which controls all body functions) and result in the mechanical problems you feel as pain. |
There are two types of subluxation.
1. Naturally-Correcting
|
When a misaligned bone has a muscle that can pull on that bone in a direction that can reposition it. |
2. Non Naturally Correcting
|
When a misaligned bone does not have a muscle that can pull on that bone in a direction that can reposition it. This is also known as a Primary Biomechanical Pathology (PBP). |
Non Naturally-Correcting Subluxations
When there is good bony alignment there is very little stress and strain on the bones, joints, and muscles. See the picture below.
| Spinal bone stuck forward. Arrows are direction of muscle pull. |
 |
Test for Yourself!
|
While standing, bend your body forward. What direction does your body bend? If you said forward, you are correct. Now, bend and tilt your body backwards. What direction do your shoulders move? If you said backward you are correct. Finally, bend and tilt your body backwards again. What direction does the your body move (not your shoulders)? If you said forward, you are correct. |
|
You should have noticed when bending forward or backward your body moves forward. In other words, the muscles of the spine do not pull spinal bones (vertebrae) backward into place. Instead they pull they pull them forward. This is why, when a spinal bone is stuck-forward you can’t naturally correct it. |
The slumped posture photo below represent the effects of Non Naturally-Correcting Subluxations.
What If Subluxation Is Not Corrected?
Your body will compensate, by twisting and turning, and then lock-up. That alone creates a complicated situation. This problem is worsened by subsequent injuries that also compensate and lock-up. This creates layers of compensations (one on top of the other), which causes more twists and turns and lock-ups until your body is wound up like a spring.” Eventually if uncorrected, pain and damage will occur at the compensation points because your body cannot handle the increased pressure there. See the picture below.

What If I Compensate The Pain Away?
|
If the pain goes away due to compensation, though you feel better, your body is mechanically worse with new areas of damage and pain waiting to develop and you are literally an accident waiting to happen! |
Other Mechanical Problems To Consider
When a spinal bone gets subluxated forward, it causes a protective covering that wraps around your brain and spinal cord, known as your meninges, (see below) to stick to your spinal cord like wallpaper. This increases the tension on the brainstem and spinal cord. It also increases the tension in the spinal column so that the forward stuck bones are not easily corrected.
MENINGES ["men-in-jeez"]
The meninges are a protective rubber band like covering that wrap around your brain and spinal cord and extends to the tip of your tailbone. The meninges are outlined in red in the picture below.

Correcting the MENINGES ["men-in-jeez"]
In order to correct stuck meninges, specific procedures called meningeal releases must be performed. Although some people don’t enjoy having their meninges released, it is necessary in order to fully correct subluxations and properly fix the spine.
The photo below represent the before and after effects of our method of structural correction.

What Will Not Correct Subluxations?
Rehab exercises (though good for general muscle tone), stretching, physical therapy, massage and medicine will not fix non natrually-correcting subluxations. Many people believe these things can fix subluxations because they often feel better, unfortunately, they can’t. Except for medicines, what these things really do is help the body to compensate. This causes the body to shift the mechanical stress to a healthy area that can better handle the stress without so much pain.
What Can I Do About Subluxation?
Since you can’t naturally-correct your mechanical problems, the most important thing you can do is get evaluated and have them corrected. It is also important that you wear shoes, sit in chairs, and sleep on a bed with a pillow that is proper for your body. If used correctly, these things better help prevent your body from getting worse.
Please note that most information taught to the public about shoes, chairs, mattresses, and pillows is not true. Attend the SSS Great Lakes Chiropractic spinal workshop “How to Sleep, Sit, and Stand without Further Injuring Your Body” and learn to evaluate this for yourself.
