Jason developed a herniated disc a few years ago following a low back injury. As a result, he developed severe low back and leg pain.
Initially, he went to see a chiropractor. However, the chiropractor at the time was unable to help him recover non- surgically. As a result a microdiscectomy (partial removal of a herniated disc) was performed. After the surgery, Jason was free of the severe lowback and leg pain. However, a few months after the surgery low back pain returned. As a result, he consulted Dr. Matt at Great Lakes Chiropractic of Michigan PLLC.
On the first visit a digital posture exam was performed. The before photo demonstrates Jason's posture when he first contacted Great Lakes Chiropractic of Michigan PLLC. The photo demonstrates that his body is stuck forward (flexed). The significance of a forward stuck structure is that it is responsible for many of the mechanical problems that develop in the body.
It is important to note that the faulty structure observed in the before treatment photo was not corrected by the surgery. The reason is that the surgery is designed to remove the part of the disc pressing on the nerve.
Although, this approach may offer relief, it never corrects the faulty structure, which is what allowed the body to get injured in the first place.
Faulty posture, allows for an abnormal distribution of forces to develop in the spinal column. In some areas, this causes an increased amount of stress. It is in the areas of this increased stress that injuries occur (such as a herniated disc).
As such, although surgery may remove the disc that is pressing on the nerve, it never is able to remove the increased mechanical stress created by the faulty posture.
This is one reason why back pain often returns following spinal surgery. This is exactly what happened to Jason.
Following surgery, Jason, like most patients who undergo spinal surgery, was prescribed physical therapy. As you can see in the before photo, physical therapy, like surgery, does not correct the faulty posture. It should be mentioned, that physical therapy is beneficial for general muscle tone. As muscles following surgery are weakened, however, it still does not correct faulty posture.
At this point, you might be wondering, why can't surgery or physical therapy correct the faulty structure? The reason is that spinal bones get misaligned in a position which your body can't self correct. This happens when spinal bones get stuck forward. The reason the body can't self correct forward stuck spinal bones is that you don't have a muscle that can pull forward stuck spinal bones backward into place. Click here to read more.
Fortunately, Jason consulted Great Lakes Chiropractic of Michigan PLLC where a plan to correct and rehabilitate his spine was outlined Click here for the story . The after photo represents changes in his spine after approximately 6 months of care.
As a result of care, Jason now enjoys a pain free lifestyle and is back to doing activities that he once believed his back would limit him from doing the rest of his life. Compare the before and after photos and imagine how good his body now feels. Just think the results that happened for Jason are also results that can happen for you as well.
